I’ve been knitting a variation of this hat for several years. First I got wrapped up in the wide rib stitch with the single garter stitch marching up and down the big bands of stockinette.

I used various yarns and finally found Edition 3 by Schoppel Wolle. Then I played with the ribbing until it turned into a thick folded over brim. The design came together with turning rounds that divide the k1, p1 ribbing so that the fold stays in place.

With DK weight yarn and lots of stitches, you can settle back for some hours of zen knitting. The result is a lightweight and warm hat that is worth the time spent with needle and yarn.
