Sueno Plus Scarf

Here’s simple scarf that uses HiKoo Sueno solid. You also need a second yarn in multicolor.

This is my variation of a scarf Jared Flood posted on Ravelry a while ago. I’m calling mine the Sueno Plus Scarf.

About the Sueno Plus Scarf:

Take a row of simple K1, P1 ribbing, pair it with two balls of yarn in different colors, and you have a stunning scarf. I knit this one on US #7 needles. I chose Sueno Color 1150 Plum and Starke 6 Color 2170, Blasser Schimmer. One yarn is solid; the second yarn is multicolored. You work with one yarn at a time, alternating color every two rows.

Use each color of yarn to knit two rows. Once across, once back. Change to the other yarn.

The only complication, if you can call it that, is that you have two balls of yarn attached the entire time you are knitting, but that’s not a big deal. I let the strands twist away in a plastic bag and only untangle them when I finish a knitting session for the day.

I added a slip stitch edge that comes from sock knitting. The first stitch of every row is always “knit one through the back loop” and the last stitch is always “yarn forward, slip the stitch as if to purl.” Notice that I do this on every row. Always.

The rest of the row (between the first and last stitches) is simple knit one, purl one ribbing. You repeat this one row for the entire scarf.

Here’s the one ribbed row written out:

K1 thru back loop, *P1, K1,* until one stitch remains,

end yarn forward, slip last stitch as if to purl.

Start with a US #7 needle and cast on 39 stitches using the solid Plum color. Knit the one ribbed row across. Knit the same ribbed row back. Change to the Starke 6 multicolor. Across, back. Change to Plum. That’s it. Make this the length you desire. Bind off. Work in the ends. Done.

HINT: If you change the number of stitches being cast on, be sure to use an odd number so that the slip stitch edge looks even.

HINT: The K1, P1 ribbing lies flat yet has nice shape around the neck. You’ll like the feel of this knitting. Plus the scarf is reversible.

HINT: I started and ended with four rows of the solid Plum color.

LENGTH: I planned to use the European double loop when I wear this scarf around my neck so I aimed for 56-60 inches. I tried on the scarf every few inches so I had a good idea of when to bind off.

HOW MUCH YARN: Depends on how long you want the scarf. For starters, buy a skein each of HiKoo Sueno and Schoppel Wolle Starke 6. Keep a record of how much you use and reorder if you need more length. Dye lot is not an issue with this kind of knitting.

Happy knitting,

Wanda

PS An alternate multicolor DK weight yarn is Schoppel Wolle Edition 3 that has a lot of color possibilities! Order 2 or 3 to get started.
